@45n5 - scraper effects are definitely a nasty side effect of popularity and visibility. There are various ideas to assist with this, such as using absolute URLs on critical parts of your site rather than relative URLs. While not a perfect solution it does give you a chance to identify the scraper as well as obtain link juice from them.

Scott great post. I have a feeling social marketing effectiveness will flame out when too many catch on (see Digg algo changes), but that is definately no reason not to take advatage of it now and then what comes after social media. Knowing what comes next is what seperates the players from the masses.

Great post. The value of linkbaiting / social traffic generation isn't obvious to most people who don't have an SEO background. Once I applied for a job at a local blog software startup and they couldn't see what value my viral marketing passion could bring to their product, because they were unaware of SEO or even the value of links.

Great Post Scott. I am trying to overcome that same philosophy where I work. The past head of marketing was very "anti-social " online saying it was a waist of time because it created short term results with little conversion. I believe, like you, that its more about conversation on the web. The long term benefits may not be easily seen, but should not be overlooked.
