I had the same thing happen to me back in the Spring at the mall at one of their large retail shops - which I've shopped in and my mother has shopped in for years now. I wanted to snap a picture of a shirt I thought my husband might like and then snapped a picture of a watch I wanted. This one clerk fell completely apart because I was "snapping pictures all over the store". And like you, I explained what I was doing, but wasn't greeted with kindness in return. I've only been back there twice since and that was only with my mother because she had some shopping to do.

Great post on the subject. I agree, taking a picture will not steal the soul the store. These policies are outdated and need to be changed. I made a post on this as well: http://blog.qipit.com/2007/12/06/camera-phones-cheese-and-whole-foods/ and so did John Moore on his blog http://brandautopsy.typepad.com/brandautopsy/2007/12/no-photos-allow.html
