Sticky Situation (a gripe about those bloody stickers on things we buy)

by Scott Clark on September 2, 2007

Ok, my bathroom drawer was a ridiculous mess. I decided to swing by Bed Bath & Beyond (a place I NEVER shop) to get some drawer organizers. I found some really well built little white ones. They were glossy white, like our cabinet fronts. Nice.

But, with all of the advances in removable adhesives, it turns out that someone decided that they should use Gorilla Glue on the little stickers at the bottom of the drawers.

I tried to finesse them up with a razor blade, and other things but there was no way. It was nuts. I’ve had this happen on a number of products lately. Clear plastic items. Things you need to see through or eat like insect cages for kids, bananas, swimming goggles, and especially picture frames. I guess it might be saving retailers a tiny fraction of a cent to go with the supplier who uses the cheaper hi-test adhesives, and I guess that a tiny fraction of customers are removing them in the store, but is it worth the frustration encountered by the rest of us?

I ended up with a choice of using adhesive remover (latex gloves and a breathing mask required) or drawer liner (over 1 hour of trimming and cutting) or over an hour to return them and try to find an alternative…

I think I should have the material analyzed as a new adhesive for catching nuisance animals or perhaps replacing those dangerous cables on aircraft carriers as a method to stop returning airplanes.
